A Parisian invention, 1816
The first chronograph was, like most useful things, a workaround. Louis Moinet was a watchmaker in Paris with a side interest in astronomy, and his pocketwatch — the compteur de tierces — was built in 1816 not to time meetings, but to measure the passage of celestial bodies across a telescope eyepiece. It read to a sixtieth of a second. It ran at 30 Hz, four times faster than a modern wristwatch.
For a century it was lost to private hands and only re-discovered in 2013, at which point the watch world quietly rewrote its own history. The "first" chronograph everyone had pointed to before — Nicolas Rieussec's seconde mobile from 1821 — became the second.
From pocket to wrist
The wrist-worn chronograph arrived through the front door — pilots, in 1915. Atelier Beaumont built the first one for the Royal Aero Service, then for civilian aviators who needed to time fuel burn and navigate by dead reckoning. It used a single pusher integrated into the crown; the chronograph was a tool, and it had to survive a cockpit.
By the 1930s, the two-pusher format we know today was standard. Start, stop, reset. Three buttons doing three things. Nothing more.
The column wheel revolution
If you open the back of a CHRON. Aviator and look at what makes it different from a quartz chronograph, you'll find a column wheel — a small disc of vertical pillars that orchestrates the start, stop, and reset functions through mechanical leverage alone.
It's a more expensive way to build a chronograph than the alternative (a "cam-actuated" lever system). It feels different too — the pusher has a definitive, slightly heavier click, and the second hand starts cleanly without the slight backlash of a cam system. The column wheel is, in our view, the right way to build one.

Why it still matters
Your phone times things to the millisecond. Your laptop syncs to atomic clocks. The chronograph is none of these things — it's accurate to within a few tenths of a second, it loses its precision over weeks of use, and it requires you to be present at the start and the stop.
That's the point. A chronograph asks for your attention twice: when you push to start, and when you push to stop. In between, it tells a small physical story about the time you spent.

What to look for
If you're shopping for your first chronograph, three things matter:
- The pusher feel. Press it before you buy it. If it feels mushy or vague, walk away.
- The dial layout. Sub-dial registers should be legible at a glance. Anything that requires squinting fails the basic job.
- The size. A chronograph wears 2–3 mm larger than its case diameter would suggest. Measure your wrist.
And then — and this is the important part — actually use it. Time your morning coffee. Time a phone call. The chronograph is a tool you'll grow into.
